Jazzy's Dortjes.

Last night I stayed up way too late sewing these Dortje pants.
Everyone was asleep and it was so quiet and after cutting them out last Thursday, I was itching to finish them already.

I did have one disaster when I tried to rip a seam apart (I've lost my quick-unpick), and ripped right up one whole leg front. But other than that it went pretty smoothly.

I'm loving sewing the patterns from Sewing Clothes Kids Love but I'm still irritated by the annoying tissue thin/enormous pattern pages.

I do love the little details on this pattern that look a bit fancy, like the fake fly and the pockets in the front you can fit your whole hand in.

At one stage right at the end, I held the newly sewn pants up against another pair of Jazzy's pants and they looked too wide. So I turned them back inside out and cut a few inches off the outside pant legs. I think they are possibly a bit narrow now but the girl lives in leggings and hates baggy jeans so I think they'll pass.

She tried them on this morning so I could test the length and waist measurements and now wont take them off for me to finish them so they must be ok.

Funny how things change so quickly sometimes. About a month ago I would have sworn that I was a pattern maker uperer and couldn't bear to make other people's patterns but now I can't seem to stop. And I'm learning so much along the way, so when I do get back to drafting my own patterns, I'll know so many more tricks.

I hope you are enjoying the weekend where ever you are, whatever you are doing. XX

Oh and one last thing, does anybody know what dortjes actually means?

  2. No I don't but was hoping by the end of your post to be enlightened! Oh well. Love those back pockets and frill at the hem. One of our girls had jeans with frills and I did love them.

  3. No idea what it means?!?!?
Brilliant pants. Again - sensational fabric choices/combinations.
... I think I am going to have to get my hands on one of those books.

BTW - aren't your girls just wonderful models! I have no such luck here :(

  4. I have this book and have been dying to try this design for my wee girl. (I'm a patternmaker who knows how much time it takes to draft a proper one.... easier to use one that's ready-made!).

If you stick the tissue patterns to card or hevier paper with spry glue you'll get a more durable pattern. I do that wilt most tissue patterns, because I HATE the stuff. Unfortunately, to fit them all in a book they have to be made as compact as possible.

  5. Ummm... that'd HEAVIER card with SPRAY glue. And I do that WITH most tissue pattens.

Note to self: Read what you've written before pressing PUBLISH

  7. Ahh her patterns will do that to you! Make sure you make a feliz, it's not as daunting as it seems! And when you finish everything in the book try the redondo skirt, lunada pants, and Hermosa wave top. I have the patterns but have not made them yet but SO CUTE! And they look very simple. I will try to tackle them this month!

  11. I have no idea what Dortjes means but I love those pants.....why couldn't my mum make me some like that? I do recall her making herself some similar that were lime green and had purple polka dots on them, even had a top to match....Shudder!!! ;-) Have a great Easter, are you doing an egg hunt for the girls?

  12. The pants are gorgeous and I love the book too! Nancy has written about the tissue patterns on her blog and one of her suggestions is to iron the patterns onto fusible interfacing.

  22. Just gorgeous Kate. No idea what Djorte means sorry. If you have the time and inclination, iron some cheap lightweight fusible interfacing to theback of the pattern sheets. They are still big but much more manageable. It takes a bit of time and fiddling but then you feel like they are a bit more robust. You have inspired me to go and scrabble through some of my vintage stash now!

  23. PS I should add that I have tried to follow your blog quite a few times but something goes awry and it just hasn't been happening. So I am trying again.

  24. Those look wonderful! I know what you mean about the pattern maker upperer thing, I tend to go back and forth, different phases.

It's definitely a good sign when a kid wont take off the item you've just made. In fact, I'd like a pair of those too.
