My creative space.

In my creative space this week I am darning in the ends of my first set of stripes for my stripey pipes project.

And I'm trying to figure out a way to attach them to the black foam pipes that carry hot water from the wood cooker in our kitchen to the radiators all around the house. I'm thinking cable ties or fishing wire??

Every now and then I'm hooking a rainbow row of the queen granny stripe blanket on our bed. It's terribly cold and grey outside and so nice to snuggle in bed and crochet a rainbow stripe.

I'm knitting the last two inches of my Graphite Mara.

At this stage I am desperate to finish with the monotonous rows of knit, knit, purl, purl, knit, knit, purl, purl and actually wear the thing.

And being the school holidays, a lot of my day light hours are spent helping my girlies with their own creative endeavours such as the gingerbread wedding above.

As far as I can see, I haven't posted a my creative space since two March's ago but it feels great to be back.

I'm so looking forward to seeing what you've got going on in your space this week.
Are you making something exciting?
Are you at that exciting beginning stage, or are you racing towards the finish line?

Happy making my friends.  xx

  1. I keep saying "pipes with stripes, stripey pipes" over & over in my head. Very Dr Seuss. Tee hee.
Every Esse related post you write has me yearning for the day we own our own home. I've convinced the Samuel we need a wood fired stove. So that's one hurdle out of the way.
Your Mara is looking divine. Quick, race to the finish line. Your neck surely needs it in this icy weather. What yarn are you using, it looks lovely.
    Stay snug.

    1. So very Dr Seuss indeed.
And I'm using Bendigo Woollen Mills Rustic.
It is my new favourite yarn.
      Such depth and softness. Love!

  2. Hello lovely lady, I do so look forward to reading your posts and reading about stripey pipes and gingerbread weddings is no exception.
Looking forward to seeing your Mara finished, although perhaps not as much as you because you need it to keep out the cold and be snug and warm. Not easy in a country Victorian winter.
Have a fab day and stay warm,
    Anne xx

  7. Loving the winter weather for yarn play too...such a cosy thing to do, to snuggle down and crochet or knit. Your stripy pipe covers are going to look so fun, and I love the gingerbread wedding - so quirky!

  8. I vote for cable ties...that's how I wrapped my fence. It's been up for 2 years and still going strong.

I can't wait to see the stripey pipes. Just a most excellent project. xx

I'm usin Vinnis, a local South Africa yarn, in three types, the cotton, organic bamboo, and cotton bamboo blend. Love love love the yarn. I just posted the first square on my crochet page ons Facebook (Ons Hekel), can't wait to get on.

  13. re stripey pipes: how about wrapping around the back of the pipe and then working a simple seam in wool all the way up. when you're done ~ turn the fabric round so the seam is hidden at the back. :-)

  14. Wow, you are buzzing and prolific this week - it's lovely to see! For me (with no creativity at all) you can't go past cable ties, I use them for everything...but, Christa sounds very very wise and clever.

  15. Those pipes are going to look fantastic Kate! and I love looking at that beautiful basket of yarn.
The graphite mara is just gorgeous too. You've reminded me I still have a jumper I was hooking from last winter! Must look for that and see if I can finish it and start wearing it this winter :) The gingerbread wedding is fabulous - don't you just love kid's imaginations? Mine are back at school again now so I'm trying to get organised again and cleaning up all the chaos! Have a fun holiday :) Kx

  16. Hey Kate! I'm still going with my very basic treble stitch blanket. I have a funny feeling it could actually be one of your patterns (or maybe not) that I found via JustB. When I clicked on the link it was by someone named "Kate". Who knows! But its my first BIG project since learning to crochet. To be honest it's only the third thing I've crocheted ( the other two were scarves)& I'm loving it. It's almost done :)

One thing I've been wanting to ask is do you prefer to knit or crochet? Which is easier to learn? I taught myself to crochet by watching youtube vids & I struggle to read patterns ( the terminolgy confuses me)but I'm getting there. Everything so far is a bit wonky donky style but it's ok, I don't mind things being imperfect. I'm just wondering if I could learn to knit or if it would be too hard....

  17. What about buttons? You could button them on. Maybe if you just threaded a little elastic through the holes on a button, then make a loop, thread it through both edges and loop it back on itself.... ok, that might be a bit crazy?

  18. Oh i love your pipes project ...it's just like yarn bombing but in your own home!

  19. Just that photo of your colourful yarn stash in that basket makes me want to start up a project right now - although summer in California means we're about as far away from needing pipe cozies as possible! I need to start thinking ahead and making some winter knits for my girls. Thanks for the inspiration!

  20. Love your stripes.....just beautifully happy in my mind! I also love the charcoal of your graphite mara, but it must be hard to work with it, is it?

  22. My creative space is all on hold at the moment, but it looks like sewing and quilting and painting and art journalling and a bit of photography all thrown in together.

I think the idea of elastic on buttons for your stripes is awesome - I fastened a neck warmer that way with hat elastic threaded through the shanks of 2 chunky vintage leather buttons. Looked really effective and worked a treat! Although you can't go past cable ties for their universal application - just finished using them to attach a perspex "window" to our chicken coop mesh to keep the rain out!

  25. Love your pipes project! Reminds me of a project I did a couple of years ago now...Knit a year. You were supposed to knit a few rows every day in a color representing your mood. I blogged about it. I divided my year into seasons. Problem is now I have four very very long strips! But it was fun. Maybe I'll think of something to do with them soon.

  26. I've just finished two cushions that took me ages because I kept starting other things for birthday gifts. I strangely feel like screaming "woohoo" every time I'm finally done, even though I love doing them. Well, except for the knitted cushion cover, that made me want to die. I have a ton of stuff planned to make for the new baby, but am rapidly running out of time. Plus stuff for other people's babies, and stuff for Abby's room which looks like it's probably going to have to wait. I do know one thing though, I'll never knit again. Ugh!

  27. I just found your blog. I LOVE your stripey pipes project - in fact I thought it was going to be a long crazy scarf, which would be equally adorable! Your photography is just gorgeous too. Now I'll go read more!
